And The Winner Is...
I've spent some time over the last few days thinking about what building Jo(e) Social Media has meant. Here's a few things that stick out:
1. We've learned to negotiate with each other. Joe & I are complete opposites, & so most business decisions are well debated before execution.
2. We've valued & honoured our team, as often as possible. We also had to make hard decisions, letting great people go who weren't a fit for our business.
3. We've worked, & worked, & worked. Of course. Some very long days, & sometimes nights when a client is in crisis. And we've also made time for rest. This part is key to our success.
4. We've focused on our allies, & put little thought to our detractors.
5. We took huge risks. We gave up pay to bring on help. We said "no" when it was scary to say it, but in our best interest to turn down. We said "yes" when it was scary, but in our best interests to figure out.
6. We have a plan, which we review often, & we make business decisions based on that plan. This means we pass on a lot of opportunities, but we try to be sure we take advantage of opportunities that fit our direction, rather than everything that's offered to us.
7. We believe in our ability to figure it out.
8. We volunteer. We network. We mentor. And then we volunteer, network & mentor some more.
We're 6 years in. I can't wait to see where our business takes us in the next 4.
