Why Work With a Recruiter?
A good recruiter is not only a conduit for information about employers and positions, but also an advocate who can put candidates in the best position possible and go to bat for candidates to help close the deal. Below I’ve summarized some of the prime advantages to using a recruiter and explained how we can partner with candidates to ensure the best outcome.
1) You avoid the resume black hole. We’ve all applied for jobs online and questioned whether the employer even received our resume. It happens to even the very best candidates, and often candidates who are spot-on for a position will not receive an interview because their resume doesn’t reach the right person. Recruiters send your materials directly to the primary decision-makers and circumvent the online submission process. We can guarantee that your resume was received and quickly provide substantive feedback as you move through the hiring process.
2) You’re automatically shortlisted. Not only can a recruiter bypass the black hole of online resume submission, but we also put your name in the short stack of candidates. Recruiters typically only send the most qualified candidates to our clients, usually a very small group of rock stars who have everything the client is looking for. As a result, employers trust us to vet our candidates on the front end, and they take a hard look at all of the candidates we submit.
3) We help you read between the lines of the job description and provide essential inside intel. Job descriptions can often be vague and may not clearly articulate the skills and qualities that employers are really looking for. Before engaging in a search, we speak at length with employers to garner all of the most important details about a job, especially the ones that are typically not included in the online posting, including full compensation and benefits packages, company culture, management style, work environment, nonnegotiable experience, and the keys to success at a given employer and within a particular team. We provide candidates with this information at the outset, which helps them (a) determine if the position will be a true fit, and (b) tailor their resume to highlight what’s really important to the employer.
4) We coach you through every step in the process. When I am working with a candidate, my goal is to help that candidate get the best offer possible with the employer who will be the best fit. If we work together, I will help revise your resume to ensure it highlights all of your on-point experience, provide you with essential details to succeed through all stages of the interview process (like the personalities of the interviewers and past interview questions), help you negotiate the highest salary and benefits package (including a potential signing bonus and relocation package, if possible), work with the employer to set the best start date for you, and assist you with any relocation questions.
5) We serve as the middle-man and ask the difficult questions for you. Many candidates are reluctant to ask employers directly about compensation, benefits, work environment and hours, personalities, and other details that may be uncomfortable to discuss. As a recruiter, it is my job to gather these details, and to ask questions as they arise during the process, so that you can avoid awkward moments and focus on highlighting your experience.
Couldn't have said it better myself!
Great article. Gives me validation on my new move. I have recently started reaching out to recruiters in my area!
Sarah - I agree that working with a recruiter increases the job seekers chances of finding the best job. I like having someone that provides me with details about the company, company's culture, and other details that are not readily available. I have been working with Lucy Carstarphen and Kara Coffee with Special Counsel and would recommend them highly. I cannot believe all that they have been doing to promote my skills and abilities.
Great post Sarah Breen
