Platform Engineering has been on the rise in the industry and it is being widely developed and adopted by the Organisations. You would have come across several articles about why platform engineering is needed and how the Organisations need to realise it and so on. Here I would like to cover my perspective on why an Organisation would need and the top benefits of Platform Engineering.
Top significant benefits of having Platform Engineering are:
- Faster Development Cycles
- Faster Time To Market (TTM)
- Evolving using newfangled technologies (Low-Code or No-Code and GenAI)
Let me talk about each of these points in detail.
- Faster Development Cycles - Faster dev cycles are needed for the Dev Team so as to get feedback early and work on it. Platform Engineering helps achieve this by automating mundane tasks done by the developers. Tasks could be on-boarding, self service to various tools needed for development, automation of test cycles, automated workflows and so on. These workflows when built inside the platform significantly reduce cognitive load of developers, avoid friction among teams. One of the recommended way to offer these features is via an Internal Developer Platform (IDP). IDP will set the base and can speed up the implementations of these automations.
- Faster TTM - In this era companies like to Go-Live early, launch the products and help business compete with peers. Companies which launch product missions from time to time like to have their Digital Stack extensible, accommodate new products and release them to Prod faster. Hence it is imperative for business teams not to reinvent same wheel instead reuse the existing tool chain, workflows and automations orchestrated in the Platform Engineering and help achieve faster Production releases.
