Why is it always code.. code?
As a kid when I was growing up in urban Bangalore, it was a very fanciful period where Fast food was starting up and becoming the new meeting hubs for a vibrant young population and it was a time when Software firms were trying to get their feet in and kids were mostly involved in outdoor games and Doordarshan was the only channel available on TV. Parents were interested in teaching kids - Music, Karate, and loved taking them to Lal Baugh and Cubbon Park. In this mix was the budding organizations like Brilliant Computers, Aptech, and NIIT that would say we'll teach computers - basics, intermediate, and expert level learnings.!! That did make me curious, rather should say forcefully to know more about it and got enrolled in NIIT.
At home my parents also taught me a very good habit of "saving", they would give me the back then new Rs 2 and Rs 5 coins that I would collect in a piggy bank and then take it on my bicycle to the nearby provision store or Medical shop and get them exchanged to currency notes. The next day, with my father's help I would fill up a deposit form and head to the nearby bank to deposit the money into my account. These 2 experiences of my childhood are unique in a way as that "saving to learning" mindset evolved through me. Even though with time, I realized what I learned in NIIT is not something that would define my career but the concept of saving did infuse in me a lot of mindful decision-making traits and supports me still every day. The mindset to save is something that parents in the current day world need to teach their kids rather than "how to code" because this quality of coding is not meant to be taught, but it's meant to be learned in life.
Kids can pick up the skill to code as they see, explore and grow but the basic accounting concepts are something that needs to be taught at home, In the world of e-commerce where kids barely see cash, they feel they can get anything they want if they have an app! Do we need to explain how the purchase cycle works? - Yes. Kids need to understand the economy of the world which would make them either an active or passive decision-maker and it's based on this decision they would then decide to pick learning or professional aspirations, which would make their journey unique and a fruitful one.
At the current juncture of my life, I've just realized the wonderful habit that my parents taught me as a kid was lost in me and I'm now trying to get myself out of my comfort zone to learn more about the basic stuff around what is money, time and its relationship? It's fascinating and gives the satisfaction of learning something closer to me.. than coding
...My take, look out for things which make kids feel happy by learning out of the box!..... than by forceful teaching in the box!!!!
Well said... I have never seen companies lining up ...in-front of their best students' houses, asking for thier appointment....(So called coding companies) of course, i know to spend more on books, which gives me varied knowledge and pleasure, than coding...
