Why AI-Generated Secure Code Doesn’t Make Application Security Obsolete”
When AI-assisted secure coding tools started rolling out, I watched a familiar pattern emerge. (i'm referring to the Anthropic 's Claude Code Security announcement recently).
Panic was set in AppSec.
Suddenly, Application Security was “dead”.
That reaction honestly surprised me.
It’s always been fashionable in tech to say, “I want to automate myself out of a job.” So when AI starts helping produce safer code… why are we afraid?
For context: I’ve spent over 15 years in cybersecurity. This isn’t our first shift.
We’ve Been Here Before
Every major AppSec evolution has triggered the same anxiety:
Each time, the story was similar: “Security will become less relevant.”
But that never happened.
Instead, something else occurred.
The attack surface expanded.
More developers shipped more software faster. Organizations digitized everything. Business logic became increasingly complex.
Security didn’t disappear. It got redistributed.
And it got harder.
AI Just Accelerates the Same Pattern
Now AI enters the arena.
Foundational models can help identify issues before code even lands in a repository. That’s objectively a win. Fewer low-level vulnerabilities. Fewer basic mistakes. Less time spent arguing over medium-severity findings.
This is progress.
But safer code doesn’t mean less Application Security.
It means different Application Security.
When the baseline improves, the problem space shifts.
Instead of spending cycles on obvious flaws, we move toward:
→ More software shipped → More business logic → New classes of risk → More interconnected systems → Faster feedback loops
AI doesn’t reduce complexity. It multiplies velocity.
And velocity creates new security challenges.

The Real Shift: From Tactical to Strategic
If AI helps eliminate a large portion of low-to-medium technical findings, that’s not the end of AppSec.
That’s the beginning of its most important phase.
Security teams will spend less time on mechanical issues and more time on:
These problems don’t show up neatly in scanners.
They require context. They require architecture awareness. They require humans.
This is where AppSec becomes less about tooling and more about engineering.
The Pie Always Gets Bigger
Did Google disappear when OpenAI released ChatGPT Search?
No.
Search didn’t vanish - it expanded the search market.
Same dynamic here.
AI won’t shrink the security surface. It will accelerate creation and expand the exposure area.
And every new system, workflow, and product feature introduces fresh risk.
AppSec Isn’t Ending. It’s Evolving.
AI doesn’t replace Application Security.
It changes where we spend our time.
My bet?
Business logic security becomes the next major frontier.
Not because AI failed but because it succeeded.
And when the easy problems go away, what’s left are the ones that actually matter.

This isn’t the death of AppSec.
It’s the transition from tactical vulnerability management to strategic risk engineering.
