When AI Gets Your “Intent” Wrong
Intent classification is often described as a breakthrough in natural language processing (NLP). It promises to let machines “understand” the purpose behind human input — whether typed into a chatbot or spoken to a virtual assistant.
On paper, it looks straightforward:
And yes, in practice this makes chatbots, customer service platforms, and recommendation engines more useful. A system can instantly decide whether to route you to sales, service, or technical support.
But here’s the problem: intent classification is not governance.
It’s closer to a “temperature” setting — trying to guess how to classify or even “feel out” your intent based on a sliver of data. Even humans struggle with this. I’ve had small arguments with my wife simply because one of us misread the tone of a text message. If people who know each other deeply can get intent wrong, imagine how a machine fares when trying to classify meaning without context, nuance, or lived experience.

That’s the risk: intent classification may sort words into buckets, but it doesn’t provide accountability, oversight, or moral grounding.
In other words, intent classification is good for interaction — but not for integrity.

It must be governed: every action tied to identity, logged immutably, and aligned with defined processes. Only then can businesses, governments, or healthcare institutions trust AI decisions.
Intent recognition is a useful tool in the toolbox. But let’s not mistake it for the foundation. Governance is what keeps AI trustworthy.
It's why I build systems prompts (start of a session) that defines the purpose of the 'chat' e.g. creative/intellectual sparring/evidence and logic based (and a short prompt that 'de-pleases' AI output i.e. removes flattery.
Lewin, you make a crucial point. While AI intent classification enhances responsiveness, it lacks the governance necessary for true trust. Misinterpreting user intent can lead to significant risks, much like misreading tone in communication. Building systems with robust identity, accountability, and oversight is essential for encouraging genuine trust in AI. Governance should be the foundation upon which we develop intelligent systems, ensuring they serve users effectively and responsibly.
