What is the Problem?

What is the Problem?

Without knowing what is the problem we move on to find where is the problem. Without knowing where is the problem we move on to who is to be held responsible.

After a time, everybody forgets the problem and latch on to new problem. Because new problems are more interesting than the old ones!
If the problem disappears from the scene, no one tries to find who solved the problem and how. They simply say "Time solves the problem". It is an alternate way of saying you will forget the problem or get used to it.
So, stay calm and question repeatedly "What is the problem" and develop crisp problem definition, (however small or big the problem may be). Then adjust the level or intensity of "spontaneous response " and "timely response". Usually no problem (except physical, things like medical emergency, fire etc) should be responded spontaneously.
Most of the time when we ask ourselves what is the problem? No valid answer worth responding comes, that too spontaneously. Then we should question ourselves is it worth responding and if so to what intensity and in what manner.
Many of us usually get confused between Problem solving and decision making. Problem solving is different from decision making.
Solution to a problem can consist of many decision making points, starting from deciding to responding to a problem, finding the problem and so on. Sitting on a decision can be part of problem solving also.
Sometimes, (usually happens in politics), to solve one problem, we create totally different fake problems, not related to the original problem at all, blow it out of proportion to deflect the attention from the actual problem. This is dangerous and can cause a lot of long term effects. One has to build courage to take the problem headon rather than finding shortcuts or ugly means which ultimately turnout to be temporary solutions and can return with a Big Bang at a wrong time, when one has no resources left to address the problem.
This is where our traditions customs and other practices we do come into play. They are all designed over a period of centuries. They are all time tested. These are designed to minimise the problems or its impact and how to get along with life. As the times change, these practices too need changes. But those changes have to be brought in by a well qualified, well experienced seniors of the society in a well thought out manner based on a value system. Making adhoc random changes as per ones convenience can weaken the foundation of all our great past traditions and practices, which we are known for it all over the world.

True Soumya. If we practice and push the entire process to subconscious mind, most of the split second decisions can be takes after all the due diligence !

Liked the post Raghu although on taking decisions I tend to believe that one needs to take decisions quickly. Depends on the problem context of course. As you pointed out, understanding the real problem is the key.

Raghu, I'd like to add ... When they say a problem, it's actually a symptom; most often they try to focus on one symptom and move on to another and miss out the bigger picture, interconnections and impact of interconnection ...And at max the solution focuses on shifting the symptom from one place to other, than solving the real problem!
