The Wait is Over: Native OpenAPI v3 Support for Power Platform Connectors

The Wait is Over: Native OpenAPI v3 Support for Power Platform Connectors

By: Abhinav Saini | Technical Head

As technical leaders, we constantly balance the need for modern architecture with the constraints of our integration tools. For the last few years, one particular friction point has been a thorn in the side of connector development: The version gap.

Most modern APIs are now built using the OpenAPI v3 standard. However, integrating these with the Power Platform often meant a tedious process of "downgrading" or rewriting specifications to make them compatible with Swagger 2.0.

I am thrilled to highlight a major update in the upcoming 2026 Release Wave that effectively removes this bottleneck.

The Update: Native OpenAPI v3 Support

Microsoft has announced that starting February 2026 (Public Preview), makers can build custom connectors using OpenAPI v3 specifications directly.

Why this is a game-changer for Operations and Dev Teams:

1. No More "Downgrading" Previously, if your developer handed you a shiny new v3 spec, you had to massage it into a v2 format to get it to work. That process was prone to errors and wasted valuable time. With this update, you can directly import your OpenAPI v3 specification to create a connector.

2. Streamlined Maintenance From an operational standpoint, maintainability is king. By supporting the latest standards, we reduce technical debt. We no longer have to maintain two versions of an API definition (one for the actual API and one "dumbed down" version for the connector). This ensures that your documentation and your active connectors remain in sync.

3. AI and Copilot Readiness This isn't just about Power Apps or Power Automate. These v3-based connectors integrate seamlessly with Microsoft Copilot Studio. As we push further into AI-driven agents, having robust, modern connectors enables our Copilots to interact more intelligently with external data sources, free from legacy constraints.

📅 The Timeline

For those planning their Q1 and Q2 development roadmaps, here are the dates to mark:

  • Public Preview: February 2026
  • General Availability (GA): May 2026
  • Availability: Enabled by default (No configuration required).

The Strategic Takeaway

This update signifies maturity in the Low-Code ecosystem. It bridges the gap between pro-code API development and low-code consumption. By removing the friction of file conversion, we free up our developers to focus on what actually matters: building logic and solving business problems.

If your team has been holding off on integrating certain modern RESTful APIs due to complexity, it’s time to revisit those projects. The doors are opening next month.
