Server Virtualization was the beginning of the virtualization technology and as the technology got matured we have seen this concept was applied to complete stack.
Application,Middleware,Database,Operating System,Servers,Storage,Security and Process are the various categories of Virtualization.
It has become a norm in the IT industry and the new “Enabler”. If not all, many of the organizations are asking to make a case for “why not to virtualize”.
Though it is not the key to implement for Cloud Solutions, but having Virtualization will complement the Cloud Implementation.
At last, Wikipedia gives a simple definition to understand Virtualization. It says "virtualization refers to the act of creating a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, including (but not limited to) a virtual computer hardware platform, operating system (OS), storage device, or computer network resources."
The Quick definition would be "Creating artificial view logically of the resources available. This logical form of the representation would help utilizing the underlying resources, processes, methods effectively."
Happy Virtualizing!
