Virtual Interview Tips for the Interviewer

Virtual Interview Tips for the Interviewer

Virtual interviews have become more common and are here to stay. Here are a few tips to make the process as smooth as possible for you and your interviewee!

  1. Always be prepared.  Ensure that a virtual interview has the formality of an in-person interview and avoid the temptation to let a virtual interview become too casual.
  2. Double check internal room availability and technical support. If anyone is doing the virtual interview from their home, make sure that the background still looks professional and is uncluttered so you can make a good impression on your organization-even from home. It’s also a good idea to make sure your family and pets know that you are not to be disturbed during the set interview time.
  3. Make sure, everyone including the candidate, is comfortable and up-to-date with the virtual platform of choice. Are you using Skype, FaceTime, Google Hangouts or another virtual service? Make sure everyone has a link or correct log-on information so everyone can join without additional delays.
  4. Make sure everyone in the interview loop has the correct interview time on their calendar and properly adjust for different time zones.
  5. Make sure that everyone that will be attending the interview has re-read the job description,  has a copy of the candidate’s resume printed out and in front of them and has written down questions to ask the candidate
  6. It is also important to make sure that everyone in the interview loop has a clear understanding of how they’ll be expected to submit feedback after the interview.  Even with virtual interviews, you do not want to lose time trying to chase down feedback after the interview takes place.
  7. Make sure everyone in the interview loop has a consistent story related to the company, the job and the role itself. As with in-person interviews, it is important to make sure that everyone is on the same page when speaking to the position.
