Value and Volume of Cloud Computing in India

With so much being written about Cloud Computing, Indian enterprises have slowly but surely started adopting solutions/offerings based on Cloud. With almost all major SI’s and ISV’s having a strategic focus on this area, a lot rides on how the market adopts these solutions and to what extent. As far as traction is concerned, most of the focus is on non-mission critical applications. Going forward, if Cloud Computing is to be regarded as a mainstream technology more applications and services need to come under the purview of Cloud Solutions.

While currently the largest pie in terms of market adoption comes from SaaS, I expect the shift moving towards IaaS in the future. With most 3rd Party Data Centers, ISP’s and TSP’s rolling out offerings around Cloud, a lot is expected from IaaS perspective.

From a segment point of view, while there is a lot of potential in the Small to Mid-Market segment, in terms of current adoption it is the larger enterprises that seem to have started making Cloud a reality. Going forward, I feel the smaller organizations to substantiate with volume while larger enterprises contributing to the value chain.

Taken together, this emergence of a highly connected, service centric, mobile, on demand consumer oriented world is beginning to reshape the way that businesses interact with their customers via social media and mobile interfaces as much as it is changing the way providers of many types of products and services differentiate their offerings – using value-add, information rich services and relationships to deliver value and it is providing a wide range of new vectors on which to base new product and service development.

I think Cloud computing is the best thing that has come up this decade for startup communities world wide. It has made significant impact already in India and has a bright future as the Indian growth story is framed. Government too can leverage various cloud platforms in its modernization drive. Also the SME segment that has been slow to catch on will perhaps become the main driver of cloud computing in the Indian scenario in the days to come.
