USING THE LEAN START UP FOR PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

With 20 + years of Business Analyst and Project Management experience, I have seen my fair share of projects, both large and small that waver in the desired outcome or suffer severe scope creep. In most cases, the end result is a product that might match the desired need at the beginning of the project but know returns comments such as ・Why would we use this?媒

Recently I had the opportunity to learn in detail about the steps needed to adopt the principles brought forth by Eric Reis on the Lean Start Up within a traditional corporate environment. I will not go into details on the barriers that exist inside a traditional Brick and Motor companies but more on the change in philosophy to development and delivery of both new and existing products or applications.

While any team, using either traditional waterfall or agile methodologies, strives for clear project objectives, requirements, and understanding of the desired end project, history shows many fail as the business need for the delivered product pivots by the time the project launches.

Lean Start up asks the question 党How can we learn more quickly what works, and discard what doesn't? The process really begs how to we get product and development teams to think in terms of proving out new features by 擢ailing Fast・and pivoting if necessary if the desired outcome is not met.

The Build - Measure- Learn loop emphasizes speed as a critical ingredient to product development This rapid iteration allows teams to discover a quickest feasible path towards a viable product. If teams take the time to define the MVP(Minimum Viable Product), teams can release both the base product and rapid, iterative updates to deliver the best user experience.

There are many barriers, most notable, radical changes to corporate culture and processes that make this effort very difficult. But as many have said, it is rapidly becoming a requirement in the digital world as users are now using mobile devices for both personal and business tasks.
