Using digital tools for social good

When I used to teach MKTG 380, on the first day of class I talked about how marketing can be used for products, services, events, and people. I'd always make the point to the 380 students (most of whom were not planning to enter the marketing concentration) that everything they learn in that class could be used for marketing themselves. I hope you have thought about that in terms of this class too, since you can use all of these tools to market yourself.

But I also think a lot about how ideas are shared. When I was a kid, this ad ran a lot while I was watching "Star Blazers" after school. It's an example of (ineffectivesocial marketing(Note - I'm not talking about social media marketing or about for-profit companies doing a cause-related marketing campaign. I'm talking about non-profit groups or individuals trying to make the world a better place.) If you write about a company, like Patagonia, promoting themselves through a green initiative, I'll know you didn't pay attention to the directions. Your blog for Tuesday will cover two things:

  1. What are examples of effective digital social marketing that use the tools we've discussed in class. Why do you think they worked?
  2. What is a cause that you feel passionate about? How would you use the skills that you have learned in this class to promote that cause?

I'm not giving you any of background examples. You've shown me that you're smart enough that you don't need them. Keep your blog around 750 words.

On Thursday we'll have our last class. That day it will be pretty simple, you will write your last blog of the quarter and you should title it, “What I can do for you as your digital marketer.” (But the “I” will be you and the “you” will be a potential employer/client.)

A cool thing about using the LinkedIn CMS is the basic analytics tool that could show you some interesting data. You should report which of your posts were the most popular. Also, try and figure out who are some random non-WWU people that have read your work.

The goal of this post is to show the world (and me) what you have learned this quarter. I hope you've learned at least 10x what you've learned in any other course.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
