Using Data Analytics and Power Query to Support Foster Dogs and Community Outreach

As a foster and volunteer with To Love a Canine Rescue (TLC), I’ve found a way to support the organization’s efforts by applying my background in data analytics. At TLC, community outreach is a key part of the mission. One initiative with especially strong impact is the regular visits to senior living facilities, where foster dogs meet residents to share affection, boost morale, and provide companionship. These visits not only brighten the days of seniors—they also help socialize the dogs, preparing them for future forever homes. Volunteers, too, leave with full hearts.

Behind the joy of these visits lies a coordinated effort involving dogs, fosters, volunteer drivers, and event facilitators. To streamline planning and improve efficiency, data analytics tools—especially Power Query—have become invaluable.

From Excel Extraction to Efficient Coordination

TLC's database manages key information on foster dogs and their caregivers. This includes:

  • Dog location (foster home)
  • Weight and age
  • Foster contact info

While the data is structured, it still requires cleaning and transformation before it can be effectively used for planning. Using Power Query, the data is refined by:

  • Standardizing name and location formatting (e.g., correcting inconsistent casing or fixing misspellings)
  • Removing unnecessary spaces and correcting minor data entry issues
  • Filtering by geographic proximity, age, and weight to select the most appropriate dogs for specific visits

Sample data shown represents modified information; real data has been replaced to protect privacy.

Real Impact Through Better Coordination

Applying Power Query and analytics in this context has made the taxi coordination process more efficient and scalable. The impact extends to everyone involved:

  • Senior residents benefit from consistent and joyful interactions
  • Dogs gain experience in new settings, helping them become more adoptable
  • Volunteers get clear assignments and optimized routes

What once required manual coordination is now a streamlined process that supports strong connections between people and rescue dogs.

Using My Skills for a Cause I Care About

This is a meaningful example of how professional skills—like data analysis, automation, and tools such as Power Query—can provide real value beyond the workplace. When applied to volunteer efforts, these capabilities help streamline logistics, reduce manual coordination, and support the overall mission of organizations like TLC.

It’s rewarding to see how technical problem-solving can contribute to something greater—making rescue efforts more efficient and impactful, and ultimately leading to more wagging tails and smiling faces.
