Is the UI Dead? How AI is Redefining Application Interfaces

My conversations with customers are increasingly focused on the challenges of delivering AI strategy. One of the most intriguing discussions of late was with Richard Kenyon of Datacom, who put forward the question - Is the traditional UI becoming obsolete. Here's some things to consider...

Will application interactions happen as fluidly as the quiet unspoken conversations we have with ourselves? Interactions that transcend keyboards, screens and voice interfaces.

Will boxes and fields disappear?

Why click through menus when you can simply ask? AI-powered language models enable natural interactions, reducing friction and improving usability. Will applications of the future rid themselves entirely of constraining boxes and fields and replace them with a simple conversational interface?

Could UIs dynamically reshape themselves?

LLMs personalise workflows in real time, making applications more intuitive. Will applications of the future have a completely bespoke, ever-changing interface for each user? And if so, how do we balance adaptability with usability?

A Future Without Traditional UIs?

With voice, text, and multimodal experiences, the future may focus on AI responsiveness over UI design. As AI advances, will interfaces disappear entirely? Will application interactions happen as fluidly as the quiet unspoken conversations we have with ourselves? Interactions that transcend keyboards, screens and voice interfaces - interactions at the speed of thought.

At Temporal, we’re helping organisations tackle these questions taking care of the complexity that underpins AI applications. Workflows that often traverse distributed architectures. These are an ideal fit for Temporal’s durable execution, ensuring reliability at scale.

This is a fast moving space. I'd love to hear how you see AI shaping interfaces?

Chris Marshment I really enjoyed meeting you over lunch and putting this provocation out there, so thanks for pick it up and running with it. Why should we maintain static applications when we can dynamically deliver the right data, in the right context at the right time using the right components.
