Tips for Video Interviews

In the last few years I have conducted very little phone interviews. More commonly video interviews are becoming the norm for out-of-town candidates. Over the last 10 years, I have interviewed entry to senior level positions have experienced vastly improved conditions in the online quality that video interviews produce. In fact when the online quality is good, I haven't notice much of a difference with video or in-person interview.

If you are new to video interviews, I recommend the following tips to ensure you are have the best experience and are able to confidently put your best foot forward without worrying about technical difficulties.

  1. Hardwire your computer to your router using a LAN cable. Avoid using Wi-Fi. Wireless speeds can differ and can result in a grainy quality or lag.
  2. Use the speakers on your computer or headset/earphones with a microphone. Avoid using secondary speakers as this can give an echo effect and makes communication difficult.
  3. Become familiar with the technology and its functions being used by the company interviewing you. Commonly used ones are Skype and Microsoft Teams. if the company is using a technology that is not the norm, ask the HR department to provide you with a help guide to get yourself better acquainted.
  4. If you are uncomfortable with video interviews due to lack of experience with this this format, practice a a video interview with a friend ahead of time. This will help you prepare.
