THREE R’s
Not readin’, ‘ritin’, and ‘rithmetic – the 3 R’s that are the basics of educatin’
Nor the 3 R’s for conserving resources: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
I’m referring to the 3 R’s of Decision-Making, adapted from “Today Matters” by John C. Maxwell:
- Requirements
- Return
- Reward
If we want ALIGNMENT between our goals and our actions, between our objectives and our position, between our efforts and our results, consider:
- What is REQUIRED of me? What is needed because of prior commitments or contractual expectations? What is needed of me because it cannot be delegated to someone else?
- What gives me the greatest RETURN? Whatever I invest my time into, what will be the greatest return on investment? Will it increase revenue? Will it increase capacity to provide a foundation for continued and sustained growth?
- What gives me the greatest REWARD? What will I find personally satisfying? What will feed my passion and drive?
I’ve found this way of thinking helpful in finding ALIGNMENT for myself, both at the macro level (setting goals and objectives) and at the micro level (day-to-day prioritization decisions).
The EBSCO Way was shared yesterday. It includes “We push our employees to reach their potential so that we can reach ours” and “We ensure ALIGNMENT of skills and competencies to roles, striving to place the right people in the right roles”. The THREE R’s provide a way to think about it to make this happen.
Well said.
