Things to remember when installing Win10! Light reading…
I installed Win10 to my 12y old desktop PC and I have to admit it was refreshing experience!
Refreshing, because it was quite a few years ago, since I last installed an OS in bare metal (not cloud), in so old hw and in so complicated way!
First tip, don’t use mac as your primary source.
I downloaded Win10 in mac and my first thought was to create a bootable usb. So, I formatted a fat32 usb, but hey!... the iso for Win10_1909 is more that 4GB (one installer file), so doesn’t fit to fat32!
Only option for mac, is to use ExFAT (ntfs for w is not supported), but this is not compatible with my old desktop ASUS motherboard (can read fat32/16 only!)…
Second tip, have dual layer DVDs in stock.
So, I thought to go to my plan b, i.e. to use a DVD and boot from there! Wow, the win10 iso is more than 5 GB in total, so it cannot be burned to ordinary DVDs… therefore you have to buy dual layer DVDs which can store a bit more than 8GB…
Third tip, install Windows first.
Now I have a bootable DVD for Win10. I am a Linux fun (windows at home is for trial only!), so I was using so far 2 x Ubuntu and 1 x Centos in +dual boot (is it called triple boot?). I emptied a 100GB partition and thought I would install windows there and fix the grub loader later… But windows just refused to install ☹ leaving me the only option of using another hard disk to make a clean install…
Forth tip, buy peripherals .
Finally, I got my windows installed. I haven’t stressed the system yet (will try it with Fortnite), but cannot wait to crash, so I purchased 2 x 2GB extra DDR2 dimms, just to prevent some frustration later… and a new NVIDIA GT710 1GB which is needed to support DirextX feature level at least 10.0!
Gaming keyboard and mouse are next 😊
