Things Not to Put in a Resume
This is a great article. I see many of these "mistakes" in resumes. There a couple of points here that I feel need to be elaborated upon or clarified in my opinion. If I don't comment on something that the author has said, then I agree wholeheartedly.
#2: Irrelevant work experience: You don't want time gaps in your resume. Include one line, with job title, company and dates, that's good. If you had important achievements that show capabilities to a potential employer, then perhaps it deserves a bit more space.
#8: Too many people focus on 1 or 2 page resumes. If you need 3 pages, I have no problem with it, as long as the content is relevant. As the author says, it must be readable, so if it needs to be a bit longer with white space, then so be it.
#10: Again, you want to avoid time gaps that are unexplained. For all they know, you were looking for work but were unable to find any. I don't disagree with the author but I have no problem with, "Sabbatical" or something of the sort either.
#19: Tables, charts, putting content in text boxes totally screw up tracking systems and make searches harder. I agree emphatically here.
#23: I disagree. Don't put a lot of detail into work that is before 2000, but if you are trying to show career accomplishments, advancement and savvy in your industry, if done the right way, this can further your cause. However, ageism exists so be careful.
Follow this advice and think about your LinkedIn profile in the same way. Very useful and great guidelines.
