Test Automation: QTP or Selenium

Test Automation: QTP or Selenium

Test automation is widely growing field and trend is changing exponentially. Over the last few years, test automation has undergone multiple facets of changes. Companies are eager to get Return on their investment.

Many emerging automation testers and implementing organizations get puzzled with question, which is better among two? Many would say Selenium but, the fact is it completely depends on your requirement and kind of implementation one needs.

Both have different capabilities and differences,

QTP supports VBscript only whereas selenium supports range of languages e.g. Java, Perl, .Net, Python, PHP. QTP will be easily integrated with TD and QC, whereas in case of selenium, we need to track it separately.

QTP supports all the kind of file upload whereas such functionality not available with selenium. Selenium is popular at places where web applications are useful as it supports most of the browsers. QTP support windows platform only whereas selenium supports range of platforms. QTP needs separate environment whereas in selenium we can use range of different IDEs.

User friendliness, easy script writing along with exceptional recording capabilities make QTP preferred choice for many organizations.

Based on my experience, Selenium is generally used by small companies while QTP is used by big companies. But, big companies now have started adapting selenium exponentially.  Ultimately it all depends on what kind of application you are going to work on. In one of my project, application under test was the website of tier 1 Telecom Company of USA, so, it was very imperative that tool which we pick should support all the browsers and undoubtedly, selenium was the choice!!!

Many new automation tools are coming in the market these days. Automation is on the verge of disruption!!!
