Tenacity

2020 has been exceptionally challenging; difficult for everyone, some far worse than others. Some of us know people who've lost their lives. Most of us are carrying higher levels of anxiety - our health, economic security and relationships at risk. The news is grim, and sadly forces in our society seem determined to fight common sense and tear us apart.

For me this year has also seen other points of stress. I've moved countries, jobs, cities, and houses. I've also managed to have a bit of an accident, with a clear if long path to recovery.

I've adjusted to lock down, but it's not always been easy. With everything that's changed, I'm sometimes questioned myself. I've felt pessimism, exasperation, frustration.

But I have found a well of support deeper than I expected. My network.

Some people talk of their professional network like glib marketeers. We all know those perpetually positive types (particularly here). But as it turns out, while some professional networks are shallow, some run surprisingly deep.

I've been humbled to realise how many of colleagues are a source of strength. At my lowest ebb, I've had calls from distant friends; an email from someone asking how I'm doing; a late night SMS from a leader wishing me well. I've occasionally asked for help...and been overwhelmed by the offers. Most of the direct benefit I received pales into insignificance compared to the boost I get knowing people are in my corner. Beats any drug, any day of the week.

My observation: as we live through a long term lock down, don't underestimate the power - and the responsibility - of your network. Your real network.

Ask for help. Tell a story. Share your doubts. Seek advice. Stay connected.

And if you are doing fine - elicit others. Ask questions. Listen to those who need a boost.

Long haul ahead. We'll all keep going if we keep helping each other.

Great advice Tim! Thank you for sharing, it is a great reminder!

What a powerful message, Tim. And just so we’re clear *you* are one of those connections in my network that provides a healthy dose of support every time I reach out, even though you’re on the other side of the globe. Be well my friend.

Thanks for sharing your meaningful story and message Tim - #TogetherWeCan. Wishing you a quick recovery.
