Tech Management: Communication Breakdown

There is often a communication breakdown between non-IT executives and the IT people that implement features and technology. The people who need things to happen don’t understand the capabilities of the technology, and the people who understand the technology don’t understand the business needs and priorities.

Celestine Omin wrote an excellent Twitter thread highlighting this breakdown. Executives are hoping that emerging Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies will solve their business problems. But many of these business problems are easily solvable with today’s technology. There is a communication breakdown between the executives and the IT implementers.

Sometimes the breakdown is due to managers who are not technical enough. Sometimes the breakdown is attributable to large accumulations of technical debt that stand in the way of meeting important business needs.
