STEM Vs STEAM
STEM and STEAM are two concepts applied in many industries in daily life for solving a problem. These are used in Educational institutions for the betterment of learning and understanding concepts and are also used to approach better solutions for technological advancement. This blog covers the STEM and STEAM concepts in the context of education.
STEM
STEM concept of learning refers to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Well! STEM will be some complex skill for every student as we know it's challenging to learn and understand things theoretically we say! Yet those are the fundamental pillars of our advancement and the knowledge we gained.
STEAM
The need to enhance this STEM learning method gave rise to the STE(A)M method, which won't compromise the core STEM concepts, and 'A' here stands for Arts. Arts help in data visualization and comprehensive learning. STEAM is about the art of linking those pillars for a better understanding of core concepts. Now, this helps in connecting the dots. Students can absorb a more logical interrelation between things.
Differences
STEM is undoubtedly the necessary way of learning to get things to work, and It's like the must and should hard skills. On the other hand, STEAM deal with the problem with both hard skills and soft skills. A student should possess a range of skills to achieve a better solution and which can be achieved by STEAM. Companies can't select who lacks the STEM approach, but at the same time, Students who master these arts-based concepts can turn themselves more marketable in today's world as they are capable of achieving what STEM does.
Similarities
Both the ways will get you to reach the same destination, "Knowledge and Understanding." STEAM generally enhances the STEM method by actively collaborating concepts and their interrelations. Integration is the underlying key in both STEM and STEAM. The rise in demand for one of these methods raises the market for the other. Therefore we can say these two share core similarities.
The popularity of the STEAM
Along with the STEM, if one can master these arts like humanities, languages, etc., they can boost their professional career to heights.
STEAM can improve your lateral thinking. STEAM supports and engages the student in the learning process. It opens the student's mind to see the same concept from multiple perspectives. Softskills play a crucial role in being special among your peers. A LinkedIn report from 2018, 57% of senior leaders value soft skills over hard skills. Due to its high demand and practical learning, this STEAM method was widely implemented in almost every school and college.
Conclusion
STEAM only enhances STEM and does not take anything away from it, so why not let the students use both sides of the brain with the STEAM method. :)
