Starting in Cyber Security
How do I get started in cyber security? This is a common question I hear from people new to the career or that haven't received call backs. The answer is logical but it's the action that often falls short.
To answer the question, the options include enrolling in a good cyber security/forensics degree, developing skills on your own through certs or education outlets, volunteering, and getting involved in the industry by attending events and organizations. These combined actions show that you're proactive and serious about developing your profession.
Think of it all this way. Lets say that you need a driver to operate and maintain your million dollar race car. Normally you would hire a pro seasoned driver over an inexperienced driver. If no seasoned drivers were available, would you gamble on an inexperienced driver or a developing proactive driver that is industry involved?
There are more cyber security roles to fill then there are experienced pros. They will aim for the pro but opt for a proactive applicant. However, companies aren't willing to gamble their security on an inactive applicant even if they have a cert or degree.
Get proactive! That way you can put the activities on your resume and know what you're talking about when the interviewer comes calling.
Great write up Eric. Love the driver analogy!
