The STAGES Framework: The Operating System for Creative Collaboration We've Been Missing
I spent years holding other people's trauma in creative rooms -- without the job title, the pay, or the tools to do it well.
As a choreographer, I walked into rehearsal spaces where I was the only Black person on the creative team. Again. And again. The work was supposed to transform us, but instead I became the quiet keeper of racial and identity-based wounds, wondering how we could truly connect across difference, how we could build psychological safety, and how we might create something powerful without walking on eggshells or leaving scars.
Here's the quiet part out loud when it comes to creative collaboration: we focus on performance metrics, not internal sustainability. Most creative projects, especially performance-based ones, are houses of cards. Believe me -- I've been in too many of them to count.
We glorify the grind. We romanticize chaos. We accept that brave work has to hurt. And when things go sideways, we expect someone -- usually someone without the skills, support, or compensation -- to carry the emotional weight of the room. The truth is, creative spaces aren't failing because we lack talent or passion. They're failing because we lack a system that actually holds diverse humans through tumultuous, high-stakes work.
The pain points aren't abstract. They're visceral. Creative teams are burning out, disconnecting, and producing work that never reaches its potential because we're too busy surviving the process to fully show up for it.
We've always needed more than good intentions, but now, with the world the way it is, and with disconnection and burnout running terrifyingly rampant, we need more urgently. We need connection and curiosity. We need a flexible framework that can hold us through the wild unknown, regardless of who's in the room or what fire we're walking through.
That's why I created the STAGES Framework.
I'm naming the missing piece that every creative room needs; not a person doing invisible labor, but an operating system that equips leaders, teams, and organizations with the roadmap, tools, and skills to do this work well. Through my work with Art & Soul Consulting, I've been filling this gap for years. Now, I'm formalizing it into something everyone can use.
STAGES is the thing we didn't know we needed until we saw it, and then we realized we'd needed it all along.
What STAGES Actually Does
STAGES isn't just theory. It's pressure-tested in the crucible of theater where creative collaboration is a survival skill, not a buzzword. This is an operating system for human-centered creative teams, and it fundamentally transforms how we create together.
Creative leaders stop "hoping for the best". They get a flexible roadmap, concrete tools, and actual skills to lead diverse humans through tumultuous times in a responsive way. No more guessing. No more scrambling. No more hoping it all works out.

Creative spaces stop relying on luck and hustle. They gain a framework for collaboration that's iterative and responsive to context, whether you're navigating a single project, a multi-show season, or long-term strategic planning. STAGES adapts to the room you're in, the people you're with, and the fire you're walking through.
Mindful reflection finally has a home. STAGES creates space for the kind of reflection, learning, and well-being that creative processes typically ignore or rush past. It builds in what we've always needed but never prioritized: time to breathe, debrief, and grow.
Grounding in the chaos. STAGES brings known elements into the creative process so that your nervous system can be calm, knowing psychological safety is at the forefront. When the container is secure, the wild unknown becomes the space for crazy-awesome creativity. Structure doesn't kill innovation. It unlocks it.
The Lightning Bolt That Changed Everything
After years of running around solving problems through Art & Soul Consulting, the lightning bolt struck: We needed a framework not just for what we make, but for how we make it.
Something that could hold complexity, difference, and vulnerability. Something that could turn creative pain into power. The result is STAGES, pressure-tested in the often-chaotic world of theater, now ready to be the connective tissue for any creative collaboration.
STAGES is a six-step cycle designed for brave, high-performing teams: Set the Scene, Tailor, Audition/Appoint, Gather, Empower, and Strike. Each phase is built to move teams toward deep trust and belonging, grounded in Dr. Timothy R. Clarke's model of psychological safety. It works for leaders, project managers, artists, and strategic planners alike, shaping rehearsals, hybrid meetings, innovative sprints, and anywhere creative people gather to do meaningful work.
This isn't just a process. It's a continuous cycle of clarity, adaptation, and growth. It moves teams from uncertainty to bravery, from "Do I belong here?" to "Can I challenge what we've built to make it better?".
The Brave Creative Spaces We Deserve
If you're feeling the friction, the uncertainty, the disconnect in creative teams, you are certainly not alone. STAGES is here because we deserve systems that see us, support us, and help us build courageous work that lands with everyone. It's grounding. It's connective. It unlocks the kind of creative collaboration we've been missing.
This is just the beginning. Stay tuned for a deep dive into each stage, and how you can use STAGES to unlock your team's creative bandwidth and brave collaboration.
