Speaking in public
The first requisite of public speaking is "audibility" . It will be a great help to remember that we have never heard ourselves speak and it is a great help if we can do so. The best way of finding out what our voice sound like is to listen to it played back on a recorder. The result is usually a shock which other people have to endure regularly . It is also good to ask somebody else to help us speak better , whether or not we are able to use a recorder , and perhaps the best person to help us is another speaker. We should seek answers to such questions as these.
Am I audible ? do I speak true softly or too loudly?
Is my voice clear or muffled ?
Is my voice nasal , throaty , wobbly , thin , metallic ?
Do I speak on one note , monotonously ,or is there variety in my tone ?
Do I enunciate words clearly or my syllables jumbled or unpronounced ?
Do I vary the pace of my speaking ? Am I ponderous and slow , or do I speak too rapidly ? Do I pause sufficiently in my speech ?
Do I vary the volume ?
Is there something defective with my breathing ? Do I make the best use of my breath ? Have I breath control?
Do I have correct articulation ? Do I use my mouth , lips and tongue in the proper way ? Is it painful to watch me ?
Do I have contact with my audience ? Do I use to advantage my whole body when I speak ? What about my gestures and facial expressions ?
( I would like to share more insight on my learning to my fellow linkedians if this is interesting to you. Learning is a continuous process I believe)
Great inputs.
