Solution Focused Thinking Schools

Solution Focused Thinking Schools

In the middle of the year, I conducted a 3 days Solution Focused Thinking School concept for school leaders of a cluster of 10 schools. Out of that training, one school already embarked on training for all its staff. It involves a series of training for its middle managers and then cascade down to all teachers. The idea is to have an eco-system where teachers who are expected to engaged their students positively are also treated the same way by their managers.

I am glad that three other schools are starting this journey from this year end. I look forward to journeying with these schools in developing a positive environment where both teachers and students can thrive. I have ceased doing one off training unless it is leading to something more sustainable. Following through with them throughout the year will certainly yield better outcomes in learning.

I give coaching assignments to middle managers and they provide feedback in small groups of 3 or 4. The idea is to try some of their newly learned skills and see what is better as a result. In my last coaching session with them, the feedback was on an assignment to conduct a team meeting using the Solution Focused approach. I am delighted to hear comments like :

"The atmosphere was positive as I got the teachers to think about their successes"

"By talking about their preference, they were able to think of solutions to do better"

"The vibes were positive despite the challenges"

"The team members were on board because the shared vision is clear"

"I was able to steer them away from problem to solutions talk."

"The team responded very positively... they were more willing to share their thoughts and even ideas for improvement."

"I have become more confident in using SF as a coaching tool. This assignment has also allowed me to realise the importance of scaling and how it can lead to improvements."

Wonderful to read this Edwin Choy (MSc, PCC)! Also wonderful to see all those people smiling while they're busy with your assignment :-)  That 's one of the things Solution Focused coaching / communicating does!

Great work Edwin Choy (MSc, PCC) we should talk as I have a book on #solutionsfocused special education coming out in 2019 and a pilot of solution focused coaching for students online course with Geoffrey James in October 2017
