Software Engineering and Coaching
Hi! I'm Bernard. I was the first Software Engineering coach at Multiverse. Joining Multiverse was a career tangent for me over 3 years ago, but has turned into a job I love. I used to enjoy the rhythm of picking off Jira tickets and creating succinct pull requests till the idea of having apprentices in my life was planted in my mind. Now I sit in the middle section of the venn diagram that is programming and education.
What I think is really interesting here at Multiverse is the way we are finding skilled software engineers and helping them deploy those skills in an unusual and really rewarding way. I still write code nearly every day. What with Simon's (genius/tormenting team member) weekly coding challenges and my side project looking at webrtc, THREE.js and A-Frame I have continued to learn and grow as an engineer, just maybe at a different rate and in a different way than I would spending all day every day working on a codebase.

So my days are peppered with writing code and meetings, but mainly I work with my apprentices. I have 2 cohorts at present. I'm building autonomous learners. That means working to understand what motivates each apprentice inwardly and guiding them on their learning journey to get the IfATE level 4 qualification in Software Development. It's not that easy, the bar is quite high. We end up growing full stack juniors, who often can program in 2 languages. It is so interesting, everyone is different, and I'm exposed to so many different tech stacks and tools and working practices. I love it.
As you can tell I have been asked to write this and introduce myself as we are looking for more people to come and join our team of software coaches. Want to know a bit more about our work? Feel like just writing code is not quite enough for you? Reach out!
