Position Summary:

The systems reliability engineer will be responsible to incorporate aspects of software and systems engineering applying them to F5 infrastructure and operations. The main goal of a systems reliability engineer is to build scalable and highly reliable systems. A systems reliability engineer (SRE) will enjoy a culture and mindset for problem solving challenges of scale. A systems reliability engineer (SRE) will manage up to 50% of their time on engineering operations related work such as optimizing support issues, on-call, writing documentation, and system management. The focus of the system that an SRE oversees is expected to encourage improvements through automation and self-healing. The SRE’s creative mind will look at the other 50% of their time with a focus on the development of new features that reduce work through the practice of automation that scales.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Enjoy an SRE culture for problem solving Availability, Reliability, Scalability, Disaster Recovery, Problem/Incident Management, and Performance of production services.
  • Build automation within tooling or API’s to support reducing operational work and ensuring the reliability of applicable systems.
  • Work to continuously to evaluate problems that arise, troubleshoot through the documentation of runbooks, and improve existing systems or issues by engineering solutions to them.
  • Evaluate, prioritize, and integrate 3rd party products in the support of new or existing services.
  • Provide technical leadership and insights on large/complex systems and platform projects.
  • Engineer and support release pipelines for applicable systems.
  • Manage the system lifecycle from design and implementation, to turn-down and decommissioning.
  • Create guides for applicable systems that enable the collaboration of peers and our engineering community.
  • Define SLOs and SLIs that incorporate robust monitoring solution metrics and working with our business partners to determine them.
  • Build a community of information regarding system issues/activities driving actions from blameless post-mortems with all stakeholders guiding to positive outcomes.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members.
  • Be part of the on-call rotations to provide 24/7 support ensuring high class systems.
  • Responsible for upholding F5’s Business Code of Ethics and for promptly reporting violations of the Code or other company policies.

Primary Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or related field and 3+ years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 2 years in an enterprise-level system engineering or reliability engineering role
  • Proficiency in one or more programing or programing languages (Python or Java preferred)
  • Working knowledge of building object oriented automation within tooling or REST API’s to create tasks that will reduce operational work.
  • Working knowledge of Devops principles and ensuring the delivery of work through Agile methodologies such as Kanban or Scrum.
  • Strong base knowledge of operating systems, networking basics, and security best-practices.
  • Working knowledge of at least one Public Cloud provider (Azure, GCP, etc.) and/or applicable SaaS platform (Salesforce, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of monitoring, alerting, and healing for systems.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps tools and YAML based pipelines working within for example Azure DevOps or Gitlab.
  • Familiarity with IT governance methodologies (ITIL, COBIT, MOF, etc.)
  • Technical certification(s) in the technologies mentioned above desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Encouraged to be self-directed in prioritizing work to support daily responsibilities with multiple product driven collaborative activities.
  • Strong problem resolution and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Strong ability to work with customers and business partners such as Customer Service and Product Management to turn business requirements into technical implementation.
  • Scripting and automation experience
  • Solid ability to work independently or as part of a team to deliver features on agreed upon timelines.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Duties are performed in a normal office environment while sitting at a desk or computer table.
  • Duties require the ability to utilize a computer, communicate over the telephone, and read printed material.
  • Duties may require being on call periodically and working outside normal working hours (evenings and weekends).
  • Duties may require the ability to travel via automobile or airplane, approximately 5% of the time or less spent traveling.
  • Job may be performed on-site at a customer facility or data center, or in an office environment sitting at a desk or computer table.
