RollSim 1.0

RollSim 1.0

The industrial use of the finite element method in the simulation of manufacturing processes is still not common and the extent of use varies depending on the type of manufacturing process. This can mainly be attributed to the fact that it so far has required highly skilled engineers with a fundamental understanding of three different fields; numerical methods, material science, and manufacturing process. An easy-to-use simulation tool is therefore of great importance for the industry

Swerea MEFOS has developed the software RollSim, which is a simple, fast, and sufficiently accurate tool to perform simulations of wire rolling. Its ease of use and low required knowledge-threshold makes RollSim well suited for a process-design engineer to use in the roll-pass design and can help in accurately predicting the process window for new and existing materials. This software was developed in part within OptiRoll project funded by vinnova. The partners of the project are Fagersta Stainless AB, Kanthal, Sandvik Materials Technology, Erasteel Kloster AB, Ovako AB, ABB, Morgårdshammar AB, LTU, and Swerea KIMAB. The software is validated using full-scale industrial trials and verified with general-purpose commercial FE software and specialized wire rolling software. The software is available for Windows, Linux, and Mac.

-RollSim can successfully predict how rolling speed affects temperature evolution and help in avoiding “wire-burn” --says Richard Åhlberg, FSAB.
