Rethinking Cybersecurity Architecture with Dawnguard's CTO Kim van Lavieren
Welcome to Season 5 of the Cyber Security District podcast!
In this last episode, we sit down with Kim V. , co-founder and CTO of Dawnguard , one of Europe’s most ambitious cybersecurity startups. Kim’s path is anything but ordinary: from leading Marines through extreme training to building security teams at Amazon in the US, and now scaling a company that wants to make security-by-design the new standard for enterprises worldwide. Since recording this episode, Dawnguard has grown from 9 to 21 employees, which is proof that their vision is resonating with both talent and the market.

Meet Kim
Kim’s career is a testament to resilience, curiosity, and vision. After four years in the Dutch Marines, he transitioned into cybersecurity, taking on CISO and CTI consulting roles before moving to the US to join Amazon as a Security Engineering Lead. Combining his engineering roots with military discipline, he co-founded Dawnguard with the mission of redefining enterprise security for the AI era.
Dawnguard sits at the intersection of AI and cybersecurity, empowering teams to build secure architectures from day 0 to day 10,000. It’s a platform built for engineers, CISOs, and product teams who want to embed security into the DNA of their systems, not just bolt it on at the end.

From the Battlefield to the Boardroom
Kim’s military background shaped his leadership mindset in profound ways. He shared lessons from his time as a Dutch Marine, including sleep-deprivation training and decision-making under extreme uncertainty, and how they apply directly to cybersecurity.
“No plan survives first contact. It’s the same in business. You’ll never have perfect data, but you need to make a decision and move forward.”

Building Security at Scale
At Amazon, Kim led a security engineering team responsible for onboarding hundreds of applications every week. The experience reinforced his belief that security should enable the business, not slow it down.
“There’s no such thing as perfect security. It’s about finding the balance between business value and acceptable risk.”
Dawnguard Vision
Frustrated by reactive, patchwork approaches to security, Kim and co-founder Mahdi Abdulrazak set out to reimagine how organisations build secure systems from the ground up. Dawnguard’s platform pushes security all the way left, starting from policies, standards, and architectural design and uses AI to guide teams from ideation to deployment.
“We’re not here to put out isolated fires. We want to change the way security is done, to make it an enabler from day zero.”
Looking Ahead
Kim envisions Dawnguard becoming the centrepiece of enterprise IT architectures, optimising not only for security but also resilience, cost, and performance. With bold ambitions, Dawnguard is aiming to replace multiple categories of existing tools and reshape how enterprises think about their technology foundations.
Dawnguard is more than a startup, it’s a statement about where cybersecurity needs to go. By starting at the architecture level and guiding decisions with AI, Dawnguard is building a future where secure-by-design is the default, not the exception. With rapid team growth and a bold roadmap ahead, Kim and his team are showing what’s possible when vision meets execution.
