Resolved
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 1 John 4:16
John says we have known and believed the love that God hath to us... I want to focus on the word "known". The word known comes from the Greek word ginṓskō.
Ginṓskō means to know something absolutely. The word ginṓskō would not be seen as something you've heard secondarily. To have ginṓskō you have to have a personal encounter with.
Sometimes ginṓskō can be a form of discernment. We see a picture of this over in the book of Matthews where we read...
And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? Mat 16:3
The word discern is the word ginṓskō it's a spiritual fact a clear and exact knowing. Our hearts attest to the fact that we are loved and redeemed by God.
God's love is discerned, it is a personal and experiential reality. A very large part of our salvation came with a reverlation of the love of God. It's not something we second guess, ginṓskō is a fact. There are things in life that we question but John speaks of the love of God as something we have learned.
The Greek grammatical notation is found in a perfect active indicative, "we have come to know and still know" In other words we are resolved when it comes to his love.
Peter conveys this same notion when he wrote... Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: 1 Peter 1:8
One expositor said. "There is an assurance that God has loved us, and the fullest belief in the great fact of redemption by which he has manifested his love to us."
We could actually say... And we are resolved and have absolutely discerned and believed in the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
