Reflections

Reflections

We don’t learn by doing, rather we learn by reflecting on what we’ve done.  This concept was introduced to me when I was 14 by my high school soccer coach (and later English teacher) and something that I’ve leaned on since then to make sense of my path in this world.  As a young student of the game, I enjoyed the post-match reflections to see how I could personally improve to benefit the team and what the team could work on to play more as one.  This process of contemplation no doubt helped us on our journey to be a successful program, but also one that has helped me to become a better person.

With the calendar year about to shift, it’s a natural time to think about the past year.  This has been my year of dancing in the darkness as I dove head first into the entrepreneurial world and started saying yes to what I really want to do, leaving the rest behind.  Here’s a sampling of what I did this year:

·     Quit a job that I had for 14 years, leaving behind an organization that felt like family

·     Moved away from a place, friends and dogs that are dear my heart

·     Started a business helping others more fully realize who they are

·     Started teaching both Reiki and Yoga

·     Started a music project with a childhood friend

Only five bullet points, but it’s been enough to flip my world upside down to give me better perspective on who I want to be and how I can better help those around me.  Thinking back on the year, it’s been one of discovery and insight, both personally and professionally.  What have you done this year?  Have you learned any lessons?  If you haven’t thought about it, I invite you to reflect back on the past 12 months and ponder how you can move into the future with a better picture of who you are and where you want to go.

I encourage you to take time and reflect on what you've done. Don't get caught up in the past or drift into the future because the real magic is in the present, but it's important to learn from what we've experienced.
