Quit Belittling Execution: The Intelligence of Doing
It was a tired morning. I had spent the last 48 hours sitting through reviews and hand-holding sessions for a project that had gone horribly wrong.The postmortem revealed what I’ve seen too often: what was conceived as a “brilliant, path-breaking idea” turned out to be what it usually is, another balloon floated from an ivory tower that had no idea how to float, and no sense of direction.
Cut to the present
I am sitting through yet another session of perfect sounding wisdom, execution getting dismissed as grunt work, while "Strategy" & "Thinking" are being placed on a high pedestal. Not the first time I am hearing this, actually I feel I have heard it little too often.
The False Divide Between Thinking and Doing
As we start moving up in the organizational hierarchy or sometimes even before that if you goto a B-School, we begin to believe that Thinking & Doing belong to two different species. I can not help laugh inside when a fresher or a 2 year experienced professional talks about how execution is below him & how he wants to be involved in Strategy.
We have developed this clean separation - Strategists are paid to think, operators are paid to do.The first group attends offsites, the second attends daily stand-ups. This sounds clean , perfect separation of responsibilities but its profoundly false.
Execution is not the absence of thinking. It is thinking in motion. It involves intellect of highest degree that constantly observes, interprets, adapts & improvises. Each of the decision being made is under real constraints, constraints of timing, resources, people, regulations. Each is an act of judgement with real immediate consequences. Such a judgement is purest form of thinking because that means having skin in the game

The hierarchy between thinking and doing has become a self-fulfilling prophecy.Academia and management theory both dominated by people who teach rather than build have long celebrated abstraction. “Think more,” they say. “Operate less.”
Senior leaders, eager to escape the messiness of the real world, buy into this narrative. They seek refuge in strategy decks, frameworks, and intellectual theater ..all at a safe distance from the discomfort of the floor.Over time, they forget that clarity doesn’t emerge from distance; it emerges from contact.
The result? Those who should be shaping the reality are now busy commenting & postulating about it. Instead of understanding & operationalizing they are busy chasing a new model or framework that will give them an intellectual high.This widening gap between conception and realization is where many organizations silently fail
The Intelligence of Doing
With top busy in producing Thought Artifacts .. presentations vision & platitudes entire Org Hierarchy gets drowned in buzzwords. To make progress through all one needs a kind of intelligence that only reveals itself through action. An intelligence that senses, adjusts, learns, and refines in real time. It’s not glamorous. It’s not quotable. But it’s the engine of all progress.
This is the intelligence that salvages Strategy. We need to stop dismissing Execution as "just execution". Execution is strategy enacted.Execution is where leadership is forged, not displayed.
So the next time someone dismisses execution as mere follow through, remember Doing is thinking - with skin in the game. Quit belittling it.
Yes, this does happen in few Orgs. All such Strategy_by_Magzine gurus thrive because their Orgs allow them to thrive. They won’t exist when the organizational mantra is “Don’t Talk, Show”.
