Python Automation Through Ignition SCADA

Python Automation Through Ignition SCADA

When I first heard the words “Python automation”, I had absolutely no clue what it meant. My background had never exposed me to automation programming, industrial data handling, or SCADA systems. I honestly didn’t even know how machine data travels, where it goes, or how industries make sense of it.

A new requirement came in our team— “We need someone for Python automation.”

That single line introduced me to a whole new world. A world where machines talk, data moves every second, and Python scripts control industrial workflows.

Ignition is an industrial platform widely used in factories to:

  • Collect live machine data
  • Trigger alarms
  • Visualize production status
  • Store data into databases
  • Automate workflows with Python scripting

I didn't know that how the machine data's are visualizing in the dashboards. But Ignition showed me how everything works behind the scenes. Also i had the learning of the both manufacturing industries and digital industries were functioning.

Ignition uses a Python-based language (Jython) to automate tasks like:

  • Reading PLC tags
  • Calculating machine performance
  • Updating databases
  • Sending email alerts
  • Creating logic triggers

Slowly, I started understanding how data flows from machines → PLC → Ignition → dashboard → management.

Conclusion:

From having zero knowledge about automation to understanding how industrial systems truly work, this experience has been one of the most valuable steps in my career.
