In pursuit of learning

I took on the role of Global Learning Consultant in 2016 having no background in education and apart from delivering the occasional Lunch & Learn session, not having much facilitator experience. I was sent on a Learner Centred Training course early on and any subsequent education came from the amazing Learning Experience Designers (LEDs) that I work with. I had started to wonder more about the creation of our education and why we took the approach that we do. I also felt that having a formal qualification in education would give me a different perspective on what I do, some new design approaches and understand learning concepts.

So, in January 2021 I decided to embark on a Masters in Education, Learning and Development in Griffith College, Dublin. It was a bit of a mind-shift, going back to education after a 14-year break but it was lock-down, it wasn’t like I had too many other places to be! The first semester flew by which meant that I had come through the Certificate part of the course and in September 2021, I began the Postgraduate Diploma which is two semesters. Being in lock-down the first semester was fully online which was great from a commuting perspective but did mean that we didn’t get to meet our classmates in person. It was the second semester where restrictions started to lift, and we were able to go on campus for our Saturday full day classes with our Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions online. It is a good balance to have.

During the Diploma, it did get a little tougher and balancing the research, assignments, and group projects along with working full time can be a challenge. The payoff is worth it, I have found the course exciting and am applying my new knowledge and skills daily. Studying learning theories, different approaches to learning design, psychology of learning, equality, diversity and inclusion in learning, research methods, learning strategy and the opportunity to focus on your own personal and professional development, has given me a new focus and outlook. As I head into the last two modules in the Diploma (Innovation for Learning and Learning Analytics) my thoughts have turned towards my Masters dissertation, which will start in December 2022, and what topic to finally commit to so I can start to plan.

Taking on this course has been an eye-opening experience. I have thoroughly enjoyed the topics and have found it hugely insightful into the art of creating and delivering education. I highly recommend the course in Griffith College, Dublin if anyone is considering undertaking a similar course of study. I look forward to completing the Masters around June 2023 which doesn’t seem that far off now!
