Project failures
What if a project fails?
Did Albert Einstein, the scientist who gave us the powerful equation of e=mc2, achieve success the very first time? Did India get independence without any failures or struggles? Does a two-year-old child start to walk without support and without encountering failures? Many eminent and well-known personalities experienced numerous failures before achieving success. We find the greatest happiness when we succeed after learning from our failures. Therefore, we should never fear failures in life and should tactfully tackle them whenever they arise.
IPL v/s Project Management
Drawing a parallel to Project Management, we can compare it to the Indian Premier League (IPL), a long tournament that spanned nearly two months. Each team in the IPL relates to the projects we manage.
The team that bats first sets the score for the second team to chase. The first team is in planning phase as they are set targets and goals, while the second team in the chasing phase, executes the plans. Both innings require constant monitoring and controlling, as both teams evaluate their scores, balls left, and the number of runs needed to succeed.
If one of the teams fails, there should be a retrospective analysis followed by suitable project management techniques to achieve success. Other key aspects from project management that apply to the IPL include:
Ø Budgeting: Each franchise determines its budget, and the owner or appointed person must manage it to achieve profitability.
Ø Resource allocation: The coach, akin to a project manager, must allocate players based on factors like the condition of the playing pitch. Similarly, resources are allocated to projects, contributing to their success.
Ø Team management: Each IPL franchisee functions as a team with players, coaches, and support staff working towards a common goal.
Ø Stakeholder management: Managing relationships and meeting expectations is crucial for success.

Identifying early warnings in Project failure
Some of the reasons for projects fail to meet desired outcomes are:
Ø Miscommunication and unrealistic expectations
Ø Weak project management leadership skills
Ø Overreliance on past data without regular reassessment
Ø Inadequate identification and management of risks
Ø Poor communication skills and lack of well-documented processes
What does it take to make it a success?
Often, project failure is not solely the responsibility of the Project Manager. Various factors contribute to success or failure; However, failures should be seen as learning experiences, helping to ensure future projects are delivered successfully.
End of the day
At the end of the day, Project managers should not take project failures personally but instead learn from them. Project management is an ongoing learning process. Project Managers should continuously refine their skills through experience and professional development to stay ahead in today’s competitive world. By embracing the art of project management, they can embark on a fulfilling journey of a successful project delivery.
