Integral part of Efficient IP is also Professional Services team with simple goal: to provide first class service to customers, assist and help to deploy successfully new DDI solution in customer’s environment. One of specific type of customers are ISP/Telco organizations which may have specific requirement for their DDI environment.
Evaluate, design, prepare, migrate
One of very important keystone for Efficient IP Professional Services is to properly understand customer’s current infrastructure, so we can properly evaluate existing solution. Evaluation includes all aspects of involved DDI service. Does DNS service will be provided for authoritative or recursive only clients? Does customer’s service provide additional security with DNSSEC or so? Does it use any specific automation to be integrated with it?
All inputs during design workshops are valuable source of information to better adapt deployment and perfectly fit to customer’s need. Efficient IP Professional service team is actively participating on defining new solution to be put in place. We discussed in full details data-center appliance placement – how will be connected to production or management network; What type of redundancy make sense to choose to avoid any single point of failover. How migration can be arranged to ensure zero service interruption.
Common DNS project is assistance with Authoritative DNS migration, which is used by customer’s internal enterprise entities, but also to offer Authoritative DNS service to their end-customer.
We always approach DDI design with high focus on security and best practice. DNS Stealth design is one of well-established best practice to external DNS service. Within SOLIDserver DDI suite, using DNS SMART architecture, it is incredibly simple to deploy redundant hidden-masters while publishing just slave DNS appliances to external DNS servers. We work closely with customer to ensure that proper placement of DNS appliance is choice within appropriated security zones for limiting traffic exposure. We work with customer that running DNS configuration meet their DNS requirement; SOLIDserver management secure control of all involved DNS appliance.
It is often recognized that customer wants to be zero-day vulnerability free. It is very fair point and SOLIDserver appliance provides to our customer free of charge functionality to switch DNS engine between BIND DNS engine and NSD engine transparently.
We pursuit our technical preparation to maximum details. We use wording – ‘more testing in lab, easier in production’. Our lab preparation has only one target: New DNS infrastructure will be configured smoothly, with best practice in place and complete DNS configuration will be 100% migrated to EIP solution. Such migration covers identified DNS zones. Last minute final check-point we use is ensuring that all DNS RR between old DNS and new DNS matches 1 to 1, which makes Efficient IP Professional Services team ensured that any DNS query on new DNS will be answered same way as on old DNS.
Well, is that a moment where we finalized engagement with our customers? For sure not!

During technical discussion, we continuously look up for improve areas.
One of recent example I had chance to work with our partner #Datacomm, was reviewing Authoritative DNS traffic deployed some time ago. On migration night – re-using existing IP got us traffic’s visibility which looked OK with some missing DNS domain and delegation.
With different consolidation of IPv4/IPv6/ IP space over months, more reverse DNS zones were delegated to new Efficient IP solution without appropriate DNS configuration, and therefore amount of REFUSED queries temporary increased significantly and Efficient IP Professional Services team proactively approached customer with steps to correct.
Efficient IP Professional teams prepared and validated all required reverse DNS zones and under change window has been implement in production together.
Effect was instant, and we helped one more time to make DNS world happier with proper configuration. We love DNS and we always seek to make it smooth for everybody.
