If there's one thing I’ve learned from interim management, it’s the importance of objectivity.
The power of objectivity lies in the ability to provide a clear and unbiased perspective on situations, decisions, and challenges.
When any situation is approached with objectivity in mind, it allows you to step away from personal biases, emotions, and preconceived notions, allowing you to see things as they truly are.
This has been vital in my interim management career as many environments I enter are going through significant change of some kind.
Change environments are breeding grounds for bias, emotion, ideologies and strong opinion.
In such an environment I can only be truly effective when I’m objective.
It also brings with it a number of significant benefits:
- Better Decision-Making: Objectivity helps decision making as it’s based on facts, evidence, and a holistic understanding of the situation. It also reduces the influence of emotion and ensures that decisions are rational and aligned with goals.
- Conflict Resolution: When dealing with conflicts, an objective viewpoint enables clear understanding all sides of the issue. This can lead to fair and balanced resolutions, not favouring one perspective over another.
- Effective Problem-Solving: Objective analysis allows complex problems to be broken down into their constituent parts. This makes it easier to identify root causes, devise practical solutions, and implement strategies that address the core issues.
- Reduced Bias: Objectivity minimises the impact of personal biases and prejudices, promoting fairness and equality. This is particularly important in leadership and decision-making, as it helps avoid discrimination and fosters inclusivity.
- Enhanced Communication: Objectivity in communication ensures that messages are clear, concise, and based on factual information. This reduces misunderstandings and promotes productive discussions.
- Strategic Thinking: An objective approach helps when evaluating various options and scenarios without being swayed by personal attachments. This is also crucial for effective strategic planning and long-term goal setting.
- Improved Relationships: Objectivity helps understand others' perspectives, which can lead to improved relationships. It shows that peoples opinions are valued, making them more willing to engage in unbiased discussions.
- Leadership Effectiveness: Objective leaders are often more respected and trusted by their teams. Their ability to make fair decisions and consider the greater good contributes to a positive and productive work environment.
Complete objectivity can be challenging to achieve due to the inherent human nature of having opinions and emotions, yet striving for objectivity in my decision-making and interactions has significantly enhanced my effectiveness, both personally and professionally as an interim.
I've also learned the importance of continuously practicing self-awareness and critical thinking to further maintain an objective perspective.
