The power of Mindset
As part of my science and industry module, I have had the chance to attend a guest lecture by Libbie Mowbray, who is a part of the NatWest business building team. This experience allowed me to gain knowledge on what a powerful mindset is and its importance. Having the correct mindset can enable you to build a strong network and showcases the correct abilities and allow you to run a successful business. Libbie also added that when bringing forth ideas you should not hesitate as you learn from your failures which gives you the opportunity to continuously make improvements.
There are two areas of Mindsets, fixed or growth. Libbie explained how a fixed mindset will prevent your business from growing due to no changes being made towards current ideas. This is because your mind is fixed on one certain aspect which can decrease your ability to embrace failure. In comparison having a growth mindset is more compliant in terms of allowing you to adapt certain skills, for example, to use disappointment as an experience to take control and have a positive attitude towards difficulties. A growth mindset is more appropriate, not only in relation to business but also for a person’s general health as it can decrease chances of triggered mental stress.
It is important for an individual to always be open to ideas always be prepared to take chances as and when needed. For example, if you have a certain business idea and you feel that it is not working but your mindset is fixed then you will not be able to explore other ways that you can utilise to improve and expand your business.
Libbie introduced me to an equation that I feel many individuals can benefit from and not just for businesses. She introduced Event + Reaction = Outcome. Understanding and implementing this in our life can allow you to mould your mindset to be positive, productive, and reflective.
From this talk I understood that ultimately, it is up to you, how you react to a negative situation, you can either give up or bounce back with proper planning and a mindset to tackle your problems.
