Pay It Forward

The year was 2003. The setting was the NST’s Youth Go-Getter event.

So, what did I learn on that day? I learn about the concept of “Paying It Forward”.

For those who have never heard of the concept, “Pay It Forward”, it is basically a concept whereby you do something good for others with no expectations of anything back returning to yourself.

Done well, it would create this chain reaction, whereby others feel appreciative of the help they have received, and will cascade it down to others, and so on and forth.

Example of paying it forward, can comes in many ways and forms.

Ranging from the simple and low risk,

1) Buying food for a less fortunate

2) Picking up rubbish when you see it

3) Helping others/colleagues with their task, homework, or assignment.

4) Prioritizing time for a sick one, elderly, lonely, disabled, etc despite your own busy schedule.

To even the long term and downright dangerous

5) Enrolling in as a volunteer committee in your local community, club organization, not for profit organization.

6) Championing in a fight for a cause you believe in even if it means attending court hearing and seeing it to fruition

The list is lengthy and various. For me though, I try to remind myself, to always pay it forward as and when I can. As a principle, I try to do at least one good deed a day, and if I really can’t, I try to do it once weekly.

There is much to be gained, and little to lose, if we all start/continue paying it forward regularly.

To the friend, who inspired me to Pay It Forward on that fateful day, she became a doctor herself in the government sector (talk about paying it forward 😊 ) . Thanks for that.

So now that you know, let’s all Pay It Forward
