Part 3: AI as a Junior Analyst, Not a Decision Maker: Using AI to Accelerate Recognition, Not Replace Human Judgement
This is Part 3 of my five-part series, “Cyber at Tempo: Readiness, Automation, and Trust in the AI-Assisted SOC”, examining how cyber organisations can move from signal to action with confidence as alert volumes rise and operational pressure accelerates.
In the previous article, I explored the role of playbooks in modern cyber operations. By capturing institutional knowledge and structuring response processes, playbooks help organisations move from alerts to coordinated action more reliably.
But as alert volumes continue to grow, even well-structured response processes face a new challenge: human cognitive capacity.
Security analysts are expected to evaluate alerts, gather context, recognise patterns, and decide on appropriate response steps often while managing multiple incidents simultaneously. Even experienced teams can struggle to maintain clarity when signals arrive continuously and context must be assembled quickly.
This is where AI is beginning to play a meaningful role in cyber operations.
Not as a replacement for human decision-making, but as a way to accelerate recognition.
Recognition Is the First Step in Response
The earliest moments of an incident are often the most important.
When an alert appears, analysts must determine whether it represents a familiar scenario or something genuinely unusual. That recognition shapes everything that follows: which playbook applies, who should be involved, and how quickly escalation should occur.
Experienced analysts develop this recognition instinct over time. They have seen similar alerts before and can quickly distinguish between routine activity and emerging risk.
However, that experience takes years to build and in high-volume environments, even the most experienced analysts can struggle to maintain consistent situational awareness.
AI can assist in precisely this area.
By analysing historical incidents, patterns of alerts, and contextual signals across systems, AI models can help identify when a new alert resembles something the organisation has encountered before.
In effect, the system becomes capable of recognising familiarity.
AI as an Operational Assistant
The most practical role for AI in cyber operations is therefore not to make decisions, but to assist analysts in navigating complex information quickly.

None of these actions remove human judgment from the process. Analysts remain responsible for confirming the assessment, deciding whether escalation is necessary, and executing response actions.
What changes is the time required to reach clarity.
Instead of manually assembling context across multiple systems, analysts receive structured insights that help them recognise what they are dealing with more quickly.
Preserving Accountability
One of the concerns frequently raised around AI in cyber security is the risk of automated decision-making.
In highly regulated environments including government, financial services, and national infrastructure, accountability for security actions must remain clear. Decisions that affect systems, data, or operations must be traceable and explainable.
For this reason, many organisations are deliberately cautious about where AI is introduced.

The most effective implementations recognise that AI should support human operators rather than replace them.
By focusing on pattern recognition, contextual analysis, and information enrichment, AI can accelerate the early stages of incident handling without undermining accountability.
Human analysts still decide what actions occur. AI simply helps them reach those decisions with greater clarity and speed.
Reducing Cognitive Load in the SOC
The long-term value of this approach is not simply faster response times.
It is the reduction of cognitive load on security teams.
Modern SOC environments require analysts to interpret large volumes of data while coordinating with colleagues, external partners, and leadership. The mental effort required to maintain situational awareness across multiple incidents can be significant.
When AI assists with pattern recognition and context gathering, analysts can focus their attention where it matters most: evaluating risk, making decisions, and coordinating response.
In other words, AI does not remove humans from the loop. It helps ensure that human expertise is applied where it is most valuable.
Discipline Before Intelligence
There is considerable excitement around AI in cyber security, and much of it is justified. Advances in machine learning and large language models are opening new possibilities for analysis and operational support.
But as with automation, AI only delivers real value when it is introduced into disciplined operational environments.
Without structured playbooks, defined workflows, and clear escalation paths, AI systems have little context in which to operate effectively. They may generate insights, but those insights cannot easily translate into coordinated action.
When operational discipline exists, however, AI can become a powerful force multiplier.
It helps organisations recognise familiar threats more quickly, reduce investigative friction, and maintain clarity even as alert volumes grow.
A Force Multiplier for Trusted Operations
Cyber operations will always depend on human judgment.
Adversaries adapt, environments change, and unexpected situations arise. No algorithm can fully replace the experience and intuition of skilled analysts.
But AI can help those analysts work more effectively.
By acting as an operational assistant — identifying patterns, surfacing context, and guiding analysts toward the right workflows — AI strengthens the ability of cyber teams to operate at tempo without sacrificing accountability.
The result is not automated defence.
It is human-led cyber operations operating with better recognition, clearer context, and greater confidence o enable faster decision making.
