The parable of the donkey 🐴
A man and his son decide to go into town one day and travel alongside the road with their donkey in tow. As the town is far off in the distance, they make their way slowly. As they are walking, they come across a farmer who notices them. "Why don't you let your son ride aboard the donkey? He is young and the journey long. You'd be a much better father if you let him ride." With that, the man placed his son on the animal and they continued their journey. Further down the road, they came across a woman tending her laundry. Upon noticing them, she asked the son, "Why don't you let your father ride aboard the donkey? He is old and the journey long. You'd be a much better son if you let him ride." With that, the son got down fromthe donkey and his father boarded in his stead and continued their way on down the road. As they continued their journey, they came across a wagon maker repairing a wagon wheel who noticed them. "Why don't you both ride aboard the donkey? The donkey looks stronger and the journey long. You'd both be a much better if you both ride." With that, they both boarded the donkey and continued their journey. As they made their way still further, they came across a minister giving a sermon. "Why do you both ride aboard the donkey?” said the minister. The donkey looks weak and the journey long. You'd both be a much better if you carried the animal." With that, they dismounted the beast, picked up the donkey and carried the animal as they continued their journey. Now, before coming into town, our travelers had to cross a narrow bridge over a very deep ravine. The man and his son did their best to cross, but half way over the bridge tripped and dropped the donkey overthe side of bridge into the deep ravine and promptly to its death.
Moral of the story: If you continue to try and please everyone, all the time, you'll just end up losing your ass.
It reminds me of solutions selling. Unless the sales person understands the solution being sought (all of them getting there), the "pitch" is doomed to failure.
