Optis' Java and JavaScript Insights

At Optis, we specialize in long-term Java & JavaScript consultancy and support project-based work through our Optis Factory. Each month, we’ll bring you our own insights, the latest industry news, and updates from the #OptisFamily to keep you informed and inspired.

In November we had our annual teambuilding, coached a class of students on Hack the Future, and got to finish another customer case to wrap up our year of building better software solutions:

Steamlining Complex Enterprise Administration

How do you turn labour intensive administrative reporting into a streamlined digital backbone? 📈 For our one of our clients, managing a massive government framework contract was a complex challenge of manual tracking and strict reporting. A single error could halt the entire process.

Over three years, we collaborated to build a custom "Aggregation Tool" that automates reporting, integrates with core systems, and brings clarity to their operations. The result: greater efficiency, improved accuracy, and a future-proof foundation.

Discover the full story of our partnership and how we tackled this challenge together, here.

Hack the Future 2025

For this year’s Hack The Future challenge, we invited students into a new dimension: our high-tech dive school. 🤿 Discover everything about our challenge and the winners in our latest post.

Industry News & Updates 💡

Java

Spring Framework 7.0 and Boot 4.0 are Here

The next major generation of Spring is now generally available! The big news in Spring Framework 7.0 is the introduction of built-in resilience features by bringing things like @Retryable and @ConcurrencyLimit into the core framework. For Spring Boot 4.0, the headline change is the move to Jakarta EE 11 and Jackson 3.0, along with the modularisation of the monolithic autoconfigure JAR to reduce application footprints. Besides these two main releases, a LOT of related tools have been upgraded as well, so make sure to check it out!

Using Hibernate? Check out MongoDB

If you like Hibernate ORM but need a document database, there's some good news. The Hibernate team has released a new MongoDB extension in public preview. The idea is to let you use the familiar patterns you already know (like JPA annotations, HQL, and the Criteria API) directly against a MongoDB collection. We haven't had the chance to try it out ourselves yet, but it looks like a really promising way to get all the benefits of a document model without having to leave the Hibernate ecosystem.

In the Future, Final Might Actually Mean Final

One of the potential upcoming changes for JDK 26 managed to catch our attention. As you may or may not know, you can currently use deep reflection (like with setAccessible) to still change a final field in a test or workaround. JEP 500, “Prepare to Make Final Mean Final,” is preparing to shut that door for good. It's a move to make the language more reliable and predictable, but definitely one you want to be aware of!

JavaScript

A Look at What's New in Angular v21

The Angular team just dropped v21, and oh boy, it's a big one! The headline feature is Signal Forms, a completely new reactive forms experience built on Signals. They've also launched a developer preview of Angular Aria, a library of headless, accessible UI components you can style yourself. On the tooling side, Vitest is now the stable, default test runner for new projects, and new apps are now zoneless by default.

Bonus side note for those of you that like to play video games: to showcase their hard work, the Angular team even made a retro video game where you take a tour of what's new! No NewGame+ or achievements yet, at least as far as we can tell.

What's Coming in TypeScript 6 and 7?

The TypeScript.fm podcast recently invited two core team members to talk about where the language is heading. Daniel Rosenwasser and Jake Bailey explained what to expect in v6, like targeting ES2024 by default and smarter DOM typings. They also gave an update on the v7 Go port, including its performance. A solid preview, and straight from the source!
