Optimizing Warehouse Operations with Location Blocking: Boost Efficiency, Safety, and Accuracy

Introduction

In today’s fast-paced supply chain environment, warehouses are under pressure to handle increasing volumes of goods with minimal errors and delays. One of the most effective yet often overlooked strategies to achieve this is location blocking. By intelligently managing which warehouse locations are available for storage and movement, organizations can streamline operations, improve safety, and maintain inventory accuracy.

What is Location Blocking?

Location blocking is the practice of restricting certain warehouse locations from use, either temporarily or permanently, to control inventory flow, prevent congestion, and ensure operational efficiency. These blocked locations can be due to:

  • Maintenance or repair work
  • Reserved storage for high-priority items
  • Quarantining damaged, returned, or recalled goods
  • Controlling congestion in high-traffic zones

Blocking locations allows warehouses to strategically control storage and movement, ultimately enhancing productivity.

Define location blocking causes

Each location can be assigned Input blocked and Output blocked causes that can affect warehouse management business processes and determine whether that location can be used for input and/or output. One possible reason to block a location could be because it requires maintenance. To set up the blocking causes that can be used for locations, follow these steps:
