My 2017 Tech Predictions

It has been some time since my last post and with 2017 off and running and me just back from out of the country over the new year and work just ramping back up I thought I would weigh in with some thoughts on what I hope to see or nor see in 2017.

What I would like to see or we will see:

  • A bigger move to create a single device experience that expands and contracts capabilities based on proximity to other other devices. I want to carry one device that can easily connect to high resolution displays, peripherals and cloud capabilities when at a desk put is portable when I am on the go.
  • Sensors and cameras everywhere collecting data building the AI database. Some will call this home automation but it will be everywhere and bigger than that. I am really curious to see the kind of experience that the Apple EarPods bring for device interaction as well as a data collection device. The ongoing maturity of these technologies will bring about autonomous transportation so that I can safely use my single device on the go.
  • Continued evolution and gamification in the fitness space with sensors and smart trainer devices. I think companies like Strava, Wahoo, Zwift and TrainerRoad are revolutionizing how people exercise making the mundane times more fun to get people ready for the real experiences they want to have.
  • I hope that 2017 is the year that we finally start to move away from email...

The Cloud continuing to evolve and enable all these experiences.

Here is what I think will be misses or disappointing:

  • Fake information proliferation. Nuff said.
  • Security issues will continue to dominate the discussion and block progression of change.
  • I see the huge investment but do not think VR will be much more than the Segway providing very niche functions and not a revoluiton. AR continues to pop up and you are seeing it more in transportation with Heads Up Displays coming back with things like NAV. The question I have with AR is the distraction it will provide...
  • I have been wearing an apple watch since the launch and have yet to see the value it brings. I think there will be a pull back in high end wristables..
  • Continued loss of privacy. All these sensors collecting data and the ability to easily correlate it will lead to less privacy both for good and bad.

Amazon Go store is a great showcase of what can be done with cameras and sensors. As you mentioned, security becomes an even larger concern with the proliferation of cameras.

I think I'm one of the few people that really values a smartwatch. A big miss was that lots of people already stopped wearing watches. Smart jewelry is interesting. It may have a smoother ride when the tech catches up
