Moving from Windows Mobile to iPhone

For 4.5 years I had a Windows phone simply because I liked Nokia's industrial build quality and legendary reliability. I moved to iPhone this week owing to availability of better quality apps than on WP. So here are some of my thoughts.

Getting used to new interface takes time. There were a few cool features in Windows Mobile. - Pinning contacts and apps for main screen. - Jump list for apps based on alphabetical order. - I could also pin twitter lists so that I can access them without having to go through the main app. - Live tiles, probably the coolest of the lot. I could see the sender name and decide on opening the mail app. All without any notifications on my mobile. I could also see who sent me a friend request, notifications on the facebook/twitter/whatsapp icon without having to open those apps or seeing notifications. - The camera. Mercedes Benz of phone cameras. The best or nothing !! Lumia 1020 has the Rolls Royce of phone cameras. My Lumia 1520 was phenomenal as well. Miserable failures for WP: I can save email attachments to One drive or other cloud storage on iOs app, but could never do it on Windows 10 mobile. WP 8.1 didn't have outlook mail client.

Cortana on Windows is really good. - Supports cascading queries. - if it doesn't understand my query correctly, it asks "You wanna call XYZ. Right!!" - On answering negatively, it asks more questions. - Likewise, you can ask "How is the weather" and cascade it with "How about London, England?" These facilities aren't available on Siri. But rest assured, Siri understands the queries better the first time. Something that I have had serious problems with Cortana. 3 years into using Cortana, I find that's a horrible lapse. I have had to scream at Cortana quite a few times. Bottomline: The world does not value those who don't value their own strengths. Just feel that Microsoft isn't too serious about Windows phones. Pretty much left them for dead.

6 months into my stint with iPhone I find that fingerprint based start is phenomenal. Touch id based login is secure and stable on many sites. Many developers are more serious when the write apps for iPhone. Barring Twitter, facebook and a few other apps no one was serious about WP. If iPhone had a camera like Lumia 1520, then Apple (biggest company on earth) would have been twice as big as Google (2nd biggest). In technology, slow and steady doesn't win the race. The fast and nimble do. WHen will Microsoft get the message?
