Model settings: Temperature

I’ve found that people with an artistic background often do very well in IT and coding. They bring both precision and creativity. The same idea applies to AI agents and their temperature setting. Temperature is essentially a creativity dial.

Low temperature in the 0 to 0.3 range makes the agent very logical and consistent. Best for SQL queries, compliance, or structured reporting where accuracy matters most.

Medium temperature in the 0.4 to 0.7 range produces a balanced mix. The agent is reliable but flexible enough to adapt. Ideal for customer service, copilots, or business workflows.

High temperature in the 0.8 to 1.0 range unlocks more imagination. Outputs can be surprising, diverse, and less predictable. Perfect for brainstorming, product design, or creative writing.

Just like people, AI agents perform differently depending on how much freedom they are given. Too rigid and opportunities are missed. Too loose and outcomes lose focus. The skill is in setting the right balance for the situation.

Building effective copilots is not only technical, but also an act of design and artistry. You would want a temperature of 0 if you were programming navigation systems for a space flight, where every calculation must be exact. But if you are asking for elegant and human-readable SQL code, a higher temperature might give you more creativity in the structure and formatting.
