CALL FOR PAPERS

  Michael C. Jensen Memorial Issue

Journal of Institutional Economics

 Guest editor:

It is with sadness and that we mark the passing of Michael C. Jensen (30 November 1939 – 3 April 2024), a towering figure in the field of economics whose work has shaped our understanding of institutional economics, corporate finance, and the theories of the firm and managerial behaviour. Jensen’s pioneering contributions, including his seminal work on agency theory, have not only advanced academic thought but also profoundly influenced practical approaches in business and finance worldwide.

To celebrate his extraordinary life and legacy, the Journal of Institutional Economics is announcing a Memorial Symposium dedicated to exploring the breadth and depth of Jensen’s impact on institutional economics, as well as the future directions his foundational work inspires. This Symposium seeks to gather contributions from a diverse array of scholars and perspectives, including empirical and theoretical studies, reflecting on Jensen’s influence on theory and practice, and critical discussions of the evolution of his ideas over time.

 Themes for Submission

We welcome submissions that cover, but are not limited to, the following themes:

  •  Analysis of Jensen’s contribution to the development of institutional economics.
  • Empirical studies influenced by Jensen’s work, especially work on agency theory, corporate governance, and the alignment of interests between principals and agents.
  • Theoretical explorations of Jensen’s hypotheses and their implications for contemporary institutional economic challenges.
  • Reflections on the impact of Jensen’s work on business practices, corporate finance strategies, and managerial decision-making.
  • Forward-looking perspectives on the areas of research opened by Jensen’s contributions, including interdisciplinary approaches and emerging challenges in institutional economics.

Jensen’s contributions to asset-pricing theory would be better suited for a journal specialising in financial economics.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions should adhere to the journal’s standard guidelines, available at https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-institutional-economics.

Please submit your manuscript via Scholar One, choosing “yes” in the dropdown menu after the question “Is this article for a special issue/symposium?”, and indicating in your cover letter that the submission is for the Memorial Symposium on Michael C. Jensen.

All papers will undergo the journal’s rigorous peer-review process.

Ideally papers will focus on Jensen’s contributions to institutional economics. Science is a cumulative process that advances through critique and discussion of past contributions. Authors are requested to refer, as much as possible and where appropriate and relevant, to debates that have occurred in the pages of the Journal of Institutional Economics.

 Important Dates

 Submission deadline: 6 January 2025
