The Meaning of Computer Intelligence

The Meaning of Computer Intelligence

Before I start, I would like to ask a simple question "What is intelligence?". Firstly, what does Intelligence mean pertaining to the Human intellect? Being intelligent is to solve a problem in an optimal way or the ability to apply the gained knowledge and skills. We know that computers were primarily designed for complex computational purposes. But now they are omnipresent in every field of concern. So what does intelligence have to do with computers?

We humans learn through experience and consistent practice. During the learning phase, we try to gather knowledge and test ourselves. Then learning from these past mistakes we try to make it perfectly the next time. So, the next time our efficiency will have increased significantly! So is it possible for computers to do the same? If they do, can they surpass humans' capability?

Nowadays, new technological advances are taking place at a faster pace. There are so many new technologies coming up! Even though the term Artificial Intelligence was first coined in the year 1956 by renowned Computer Scientist John McCarthy, the technology has started booming from the recent past. Artificial Intelligence is the intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans. Machine Learning, Deep Learning are some of the recent so-called buzzwords in the tech world.

Consider the whole space called Artificial Intelligence. Machine Learning is the subset of AI that deals with the Algorithms and statistical techniques used to make the machine learn something without being explicitly programmed. There are other forms of AI that do not fall under the category of machine learning. Deep Learning is a subset of Machine Learning that deals with Deep Neural Networks. It is concerned with algorithms inspired by the structure and function of the brain called Artificial Neural Networks. The various types of AI can be better understood by categorizing them based on the level of Intelligence. There are three types: ANI, AGI, ASI. When an AI's ability to mimic human intelligence is isolated to a narrow range of parameters, it is called Artificial Narrow Intelligence. But, when an AI's ability to mimic human intelligence is indistinguishable from that of a human, it is called Artificial General Intelligence. When AI does not mimic human intelligence but surpasses it, it is called Artificial Super Intelligence. Now comes an interesting question whose results may be catastrophic! Will an evil ASI take over the World? And the answer is No! More appropriately not in the next 100 years! The level of intelligence has not reached AGI and is still in ANI. The main reason such questions arise in our mind is that if ASI becomes reality, then it is impossible to take control over it since it may make its own decisions. The argument is that once an ‘evil’ superintelligence is developed, it will try to stymie any attempt we make at stopping it or changing its preferences.

The catastrophic part is when we step in 101th year. ;)
